University of Birjand is a public university located in Birjand, South Khorasan Province. It was founded in 1975. The Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Birjand is the largest and most well-equipped educational and research unit in the specialized field of electrical engineering in the vast province of South Khorasan. It operates with the collaboration of over 35 full-time faculty members and a group of experienced engineers, benefiting from efficient laboratories and workshops. Presently, nearly 1,000 students are studying in undergraduate programs in electronics, telecommunications, control, power, software, hardware, and information technology, along with around 200 graduate students (master’s and PhD).

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Birjand was established in 1988 under the name ” Technical School” and began its activities in 1989 with the first intake of students in the Associate Degree program for Electrical Electronics. Due to the advancement in electrical engineering at the university, this faculty became independent in 2011, and was divided into the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, and Mining).

The Faculty of Literature and Humanities at the University of Birjand was established in 1990 with the admission of students in two fields: Persian Literature and Educational Sciences with a focus on Curriculum Planning, along with 7 faculty members. Over time, the faculty expanded with the addition of programs in Library and Information Science, Physical Education and Sports Sciences, and History.

The Faculty of Agriculture at Birjand University’s Higher Education Complex was established in 1979 with the admission of students in the Agricultural Technician Diploma program at Mohammadieh Agricultural Training Center, initially enrolling 33 students. Presently, the faculty operates in the Amirabad campus, located approximately 5 kilometers on the Birjand-Kerman road, with an educational space of approximately 40,000 square meters. It specializes in training specialists in various fields of agricultural sciences and natural resources.
The Faculty of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences was separated from the Faculty of Agriculture in 2011 and it now operates independently at the Amirabad campus.

Faculty of Educational Sciences and Psychology
The independence of this faculty from the Faculty of Literature was informally established in February 2009 by the decision of the university’s board of directors. The groups belonging to the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Psychology, including three departments: psychology, educational sciences, and library and information science (currently renamed to Information Science and Knowledge Studies), were established in an independent building. Until October 2019, this faculty was located in the city center of Birjand (at the intersection of Daneshgah Street and Hefdah Shahrivar Street, next to the General Directorate of Taxation), and is currently situated in the Behavioral Sciences Campus (former Faculty of Literature and Humanities).

The Physical Education and Sports Sciences program at Birjand University was established in 1995, with permission from the Council for the Expansion of Higher Education, by selecting 30 students in the daytime program within the Faculty of Literature and Humanities. In 2009, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences was completely separated from the Faculty of Literature and Humanities.
