In 1987, in one of the most hospitable and charming cities of Iran, Yazd, Yazd University was established, which was considered the first comprehensive university in the country. Currently, this university has about 12,000 students across 14 faculties. After the revolution, in the early revolutionary period, Seyyed Ruhollah Khatami and Mohammad Sadooghi were among those who sought to establish a higher education institution in Yazd.

Finally, in 1986, the plan to establish a university center in Yazd was approved, and the foundation stone was laid in 1987 during a visit by the then Prime Minister, Mir Hossein Mousavi, by Mohammad Sadoughi on a 300-hectare land. In May 1987, Dr. Jalil Shahi was appointed as the head of launching Yazd University. In 1991, this educational institution merged with the former Teacher Training University of Yazd and was established as Yazd State University, located near the Zoroastrian Cemetery Heights in the village of Taghiabad, and it continued its activities.

Yazd University has been ranked between 1001-1200 in the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, showing an improvement compared to the past two years when it was ranked between 1201-1500. The Times Higher Education has independently ranked universities worldwide since 2010, and Yazd University has been included in this ranking since 2017.

Yazd University Library

Two years after the establishment of the university in 1989, the Yazd University Library was founded. The library was located on the eastern campus, next to the university’s cafeteria, and in 2007, with the change in the use of the adjacent building of the Basic Sciences Complex, the library was moved from the eastern campus to the main campus.

The first floor of the library is designated for lending, reference books, and administrative offices, while the second floor houses the archive of magazines and students’ theses. Currently, the libraries of the School of Art and Architecture and the Mehriz Campus Library are under the supervision of the central library. With over 227,000 volumes of Persian and Latin books and access to more than 40 databases, alongside over 13,600 student theses and many other references and books, this library has become a rich collection that operates in Yazd under various subgroups, including engineering, humanities, architecture, basic sciences, and more.
